After Periodontal Surgery
You have just had periodontal surgery. The following instructions have been prepared to ensure your comfort.
- Mild to moderate pain may be expected. A prescription has been provided if needed to handle this problem.
- Ice has been provided to prevent swelling. Please continue to use the ice pack at intervals of “20 minutes on, 10 minutes off” for the first 24 hours.
- Slight bleeding is to be expected for the first 24 to 48 hours. Should unusual bleeding develop, please apply pressure for 10 minutes or until bleeding has stopped with the gauze pads provided.
- A softer than usual diet may be necessary for the first week. However, there are no specific diet restrictions other than what makes you feel comfortable covering the area worked on.
- Stitches and possibly a surgical dressing may be present in your mouth. Light cleaning is recommended with a toothbrush at surgical areas. Areas that have not had surgery should be cleaned in the usual manner. It is crucial to keep the area very clean.
- An appointment has been made for you in approximately one week to remove the stitches and evaluate the surgical sites.
